The Lion, the Bird and the Seahorse
Sick of season previews that go on about meaningless stuff like new signings, potential weaknesses and predicted positions? Below is a round up of the twenty 2011-12 Premier League teams in terms of something truly important: their crests.
Whether you call them crests, logos, badges or blazing shields of defiance and optimism, they make up a prominent part of the visual landscape of football. I have dissected every element of the badges and arranged them by type. I have previously posted a quiz on the bits that go together to make these crests, which would make sense to be looked at first.

Are Chelsea’s flowers not poppies?
Hmm, good question. This is my source for calling them roses but they don’t look especially like roses and poppies would make sense (for the Chelsea pensioners connection, I’m assuming).
I just looked on the Chelsea Pensioner’s Website, and their gift shop clearly shows and states that the flowers are poppies.

The flower on that umbrella is different to the flower on Chelsea FC’s crest (the number of petals for example). Is there a Chelsea FC mention on that site that I’m not seeing?
Number of badges designed by the same person.
2. MCFC & LFC
thanks very much for very interesting info and graphix. hope you can update it each season. totallytottingham
This is really, really well done! Ur bit by bit aesthetic analysis show cases how much historical symbolism is in a logo. It makes North American sporting teams logos look like Starbucks or the Golden Arches.
Are you planning on continuing this project to other European leagues?
PS- Please prepare Bundesliga teams next if yes to the above.
Nevertheless, great work!
Ecellent idea, well done. You missed off the translations of the Latin mottos – eg Nil Satis nisi optimum – Only the best is good enough for Everton.
So what do city’s 3 stars mean? (Arf!)
This breakdown is fantastic. Looking closely, it really helped me appreciate why I love Wolves’ crest. Although I’m an LFC supporter, the Wolves crest really pops; it is both distinct and simple.
Hillsbrough? The stadium is Hillsborough.
So it is. I’ve corrected that now. Thanks.
This post is so brilliant. I am tongue-tied, though… I cannot find words to tell you how good this post is. It just is. Thanks very much, and I second those who clamor for an analysis of other top-flight leagues’ crests.

Would someone tell Manchester that it is not on the coast, and could you explain why Spurs has a chicken on a beach ball?
Thanks for the encouraging comments. It’s great to hear that people have liked it. I’ll try to repeat for another league in the future. You can find a related post on footballs that appear in crests around the world here.
Excellent break-down.
For a laugh, some personal categorisations:
1. Quasi-Soviet brutalism:
Wolves
2. Corporatist Anonymities (aka, however much you paid for this rebranding was too much):
Fulham, Bolton
3. Zero Inspiration:
Stoke
4. For all the historical symbolism, can’t help but look a little amateurish/dated these days:
West Brom, Norwich
5. The one you’re reluctant to admit is impressive because it might appear to some as slightly Fascist, or at least Imperial Roman:
Man City
6. Best Man United badge:
Man Utd
7. Best faux-Man United badge:
Chelsea

Hi! Would it be possible to update this for the new season, with Southampton, Reading and West Ham replacing Bolton, Blackburn and Wolves?
Sorry, I don’t have plans to update this for 2012/13. I might do it again after a few more years have passed and more of the crests are different.
Hi! Any chance of updates this season ? Six new teams now 🙂 would be great stuff on the websites of TV 2 Norway, official broad caster for the Premier League in our country. 🙂
Would off course link it to your site.
